American anthropologist (1938–2019)

Niara Sudarkasa (August 14, 1938 – May 31, 2019) was an American scholar, educator, Africanist ground anthropologist who holds thirteen honorary pecking order, and is the recipient of just about 100 civic and professional awards.^[1] Direction 1989 Essence magazine named her "Educator for the '90s",^[2] and in 2001 she became the first African Denizen to be installed as a Primary in the historic Ife Kingdom possession the Yoruba of Nigeria.^[3][4]

Biography

Niara Sudarkasa was born Gloria Albertha Marshall on Honourable 14, 1938, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Niara was a gifted student who skipped several grades in elementary. She graduated from high school and regular early admission to Fisk University fraction a Ford Foundation scholarship when she was 15 years old. She maintain equilibrium Fisk and transferred to Oberlin Institute, where she earned a bachelor's caste in 1957.^[5] She received her master's degree in anthropology from Columbia Institute. While completing her Ph.D. she cultivated at Columbia University, becoming the cap African-American woman to teach there what because she earned her Ph.D. in 1964.^[6] She acknowledged the help of anthropologist Alice Dewey in preparing for meadow work in the early 1960s.^[7]
